Die Ensete könnte viele Millionen Menschen ernähren

«Pflanze gegen den Hunger»: So nennen die Landbewohner in Südäthiopien die Ensete. In Europa ist die Staude nur aus Botanischen Gärten bekannt und wird als «Zierbanane» oder «Falsche Banane» bezeichnet. Aus dem Mark der riesigen Blattscheiden und Knollen produzieren Kleinbauern das fermentierte Superfood «Kocho». Bislang blieb das Potenzial der Pflanze im Klimawandel unerkannt, doch die Ensete könnte laut Wissenschaftlern der Royal Botanic Gardens in London mehr als 100 Millionen Menschen das Überleben sichern.
