"We had 38 cattle. All of them are dead. Our only income was selling the cattle," herder Loko Kiya, 30, told our staff when they assessed the situation in Borena in July 2022. For two consecutive years, there had been no rainfall during the rainy season. Herding families had come from the vast savannah to the outskirts of settlements in the hope of finding water and food.
Our mission is to "help people develop their own lives": We help poor families achieve long-term independence, whether in urban slums or in villages without roads. But last year, we also had to provide life-saving emergency aid: The severe drought in the Horn of Africa threatened the lives of herding families. Starting in July 2022, we delivered basic food supplies for 4,500 people to Borena, the disaster-hit area in southern Ethiopia.
Our recently published 2022 Annual Report provides an account of this. The report also explains why we are able to provide long-term development and short-term emergency aid: We are well-connected locally. In Ethiopia, we can rely on long-standing partner organizations. The annual report also provides the background to our work.
In the 2022 Annual Report you will find:
- General information about the Menschen für Menschen Foundation
- Performance report: progress and successes in our projects
- Financial report: annual financial statements, balance sheet, annual financial statements, cash flow statement and audit report
- Outlook for 2023: We are beginning a new project phase in Fogera on Lake Tana. Among other things, we are planting 1.2 million trees with the local community.
