Hambela Wamena – Rural Development

Project goals

Clean water, sufficient food, prospects for life on their farm: the basic needs of small farming families are met so that they can stay in their homeland and do not have to migrate to the slums of the cities.

Project information

  • Target group: small farmer and day laborer families
  • Region: Hambela Wamena is a district in the Oromia region
  • Partner: Ethio Wetlands and Natural Resources Association (EWNRA)
  • Duration: Three-year project phase, 2024 - 2026

Measures

  • Drinking water: construction of spring catchments, repair of wells.
  • Food security: promoting agricultural production, for example through improved seeds.
  • Natural resources: Training helps stop erosion. The donation of tree seedlings helps the water balance and microclimate.
  • Income: Small farmers receive microcredit and agricultural inputs to produce market products.
  • Cooperatives: Formation and strengthening of savings groups and cooperatives. These ensure exchange between small farmers and ensure access to agricultural materials and markets.
  • Health: Education and access to family planning ensure that women only have as many children as they want and can support.
