Menschen für Menschen Switzerland is focused on stopping impoverishment in towns and rural areas and on creating livelihood opportunities.
There are several ways you can help people in Ethiopia. Here you will find all donations with concrete examples.
Cradle of humanity, country of origin of coffee, rich culture and poor families. Over 100 million people live here: A visit to a contradictory country.
PROJECT GOAL Due to warfare in Tigray, many families are in urgent need of food. We are saving them from further shortages and starvation. Especially the children need help now in order not to suffer any developmental damage. Therefore, we bring trucks with emergency aid to the needy families in the city.
THE PROJECT Elshadai Children’s Village is located in the town of Wukro in the Tigray region. The home with 160 orphans was spared destruction or looting during the main war period (November and December 2020). There were no casualties or even deaths. But now, in the spring of 2021, people are suffering the consequences of the war. There is a big need, especially in the rural suburbs. Poor families are running out of food. The local administration is not yet able to solve the problems on its own.
Our partner organisation Elshadai is well connected in the community due to the many years of running the children’s village. Many of the 82 employees are local people. Therefore, Elshadai knows the situation of the families very well. 3000 families are in urgent need of emergency food aid because they cannot find work due to the consequences of the war. Their reserves are exhausted and food is unaffordable for them.
After identifying the families, the partner organisation purchases the emergency aid in Mekele, the capital of Tigray, 45 kilometres away. In total, around 240 tonnes of food will be transported by lorries to Wukro. There, employees of the children’s village organise and document the distribution of the packages to the families. Each family receives wheat flour (50 kg), beans (25 kg), cooking oil (5 l) and three soaps. 68 Swiss francs are spent per family.
Menschen für Menschen controls the purchase and distribution of the goods to the families through independent experts.
In Dengolo, a rural suburb of the town of Wukro, many poor families are suffering from the aftermath of the November and December 2020 war in Tigray between the Ethiopian army and the regional power TPLF. During the insecure period of fighting, day labourers could not work. Even now, in March 2021, economic, social and administrative life continues to be disrupted in some places. The poor families have no savings, they always live from hand to mouth. Although there are goods available in the urban markets, the poor families no longer have enough money to buy food. They have to ration their food. Especially the youngest children are threatened with malnutrition and developmental health problems.
